New York City

1987

Two hundred runaway children arrive at the Port Authority Bus Terminal every day, dreaming of a brand new start under the thousand electric stars of that far-off, fairy tale skyline. Met by only concrete and reality, they find themselves adrift and eagerly swallowed by the gaping maw of pimps, drug dealers and pedophiles, waiting with a kind word and gentle touch to take hold of these children at their most vulnerable.

For years, the Port Authority Police have been fighting a losing battle to keep these kids out of harm’s way, a fight led by the understaffed and overworked Lt. Bernie Paggoli. Exposing the criminals responsible for this exploitation has become a driving obsession for investigative reporter Victoria Nelson, a tenacious, young television journalist. Her fiancé is future Hall of Fame Shortshop Matt Elster, a man who life has always come easy to, who is ending his storied career with a final championship game for the NY Yankees. When the body of a teenage boy is discovered and the hunt for his missing sister commences, Victoria and a reluctant Matt are swept into Paggoli’s investigation, finding themselves caught in the crossfire of a conspiracy woven deeper than any of them could imagine.
